미국의 국기는 성조기 (The Star-Spangled Banner)’라고 하며 미국의 국가(國歌) 또한 같은 명칭으로 부르고 있다. 성조기 특징은 미합중국을 구성하는 주(州)의 수만큼 별이 있어서 주가 증가할 때마다 별의 수가 늘어난다는 점이다. 미국국기는 1777년 처음 제정되었다. 독립선언 당시의 13주를 기념하기 위해서 13개의 줄과 13개의 별이 그려진 것이다. 미국 초대 대통령 조지 워싱턴에 따르면, 이 국기의 “별은 하늘을, 적색은 모국인 영국을, 적색 바탕을 가로지르는 흰색줄은 모국 영국으로부터의 독립”을 상징한다. 성조기는 당시의 별의 배열에 아무런 규정이 없어서 원형이나 수열로 배열해놓은 것 등 종류가 다양했는데, 1795년 버몬트와 켄터키가 각각 주로 승격되면서 15개의 별과 15개의 줄이 그려진 국기로 변경되었다. 그 후로 성조기는 주가 증가해도 줄은 13개로 고정하고 별만 더하기로 결정했다.

미국의 국기 또는 성조기는 13개의 붉고 흰 색이 번갈아 가며 가로로 그어진 바탕에 그리고 왼쪽 위편에 그려진 사각형 안에 50개의 흰 색의 별로 구성되어 있다. 13개의 붉고 흰 줄은 미국의 초기 연방국에 가입한 연방주를 뜻하며 50개의 별은 2016년 10월 현재 미국의 총 연방주의 수를 뜻한다.
미국국기 성조기는 지금까지 26번이나 변경되었다. 가장 최근의 변경은 하와이가 하와이주(州)로 승격하였을 때이며 현재 별의 개수는 50개이다. 1776년 미국 독립선언이 있은 후 미국을 상징하는 국기는 푸른 색 바탕에 13개의 별들이 원을 이룬 것이었다. 48개의 별을 담은 국기는 1912년에서 1959년까지 쓰였으며 1960년에 하와이 주가 미국의 50번째 연방주로 가입한 후 50개의 별을 담은 국기가 오늘날 미국의 공식적인 국기로 쓰이고 있다.
미국의 국기는 미국의 주(State)의 숫자에 따라 별의 숫자가 결정되기 때문에 앞으로도 미국의 주의 수에 변화에 따라 국기가 바뀔 가능성이 있다. 새로운 주가 연방에 가입할 경우, 가입 후 첫 번째 해의 독립기념일(7월 4일)에 별의 숫자가 변경된다.
미국의 국기는 13개의 줄과 50개의 별로 이루어져 있기 때문에 흔히 “Stars and Stripes”(성조기, 星條旗)라고 일컬어지기도 한다.
별이 그려진 사각형이 전방을 향해야 한다. 즉, 깃대에 매달 때에는 사각형이 깃대 쪽에 오며, 사람이나 차량 등의 오른쪽 면에 부착될 때에는 사각형이 국기의 오른편에 그려진다.

역사

7개의 적색 줄무늬와 6개의 백색 줄무늬로 된 13개의 줄무늬는 처음 연방을 구성한 13개 주를 뜻하며, 50개의 별은 오늘날의 50개 주를 나타내고 있다. 이 규칙은 1818년에 정해진 것으로, 지금의 것은 27번째로 개정된 것이다. 전해 오는 말에 따르면 조지 워싱턴이 “별은 하늘에서 따오고, 적색은 영국의 색에서, 백색 줄은 영국으로부터의 분리를 표시하였다.”고 풀이하였다고 한다.

The flag of the United States has been modified 26 times after its first design. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution which stated: “Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Flag Day is now observed on June 14 of each year. The tradition holds that the new flag was first hoisted in June 1777 by the Continental Army at the Middlebrook encampment.

The United States flag consists of 50 white stars in blue field, 7 red stripes, and 6 white stripes. Those 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America. After Hawaii gained statehood in 1960, the most recent design change from 49 stars to 50 occurred. Due to its components, the flag is usually called by “Stars and Stripes.”

On the shore, dimly seen thro the mist of the deep/ Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes/ What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep/ As it fitfully blows/ half conceals, half discloses?/ Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam/ In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream/ ‘Tis the star-spangled banner/ Oh! long may it wave/ O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore/ That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion/ A home and a country should leave us no more?/ Their blood has washed out their foul footstep’s pollution/ No refuge could save the hireling and slave/ From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave/ And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave/ O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
